Wake County DA Yet to Decide Fate of RPD Detective

Raleigh Police Detective Omar Abdullah was placed on administrative leave in September 2020, roughly seven months after Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman was notified of concerns that Abdullah had arrested more than a dozen people on trumped up charges of heroin possession and trafficking using fake dope.

Some had spent months in jail on false charges because they could not afford the $250,000-and-up bonds requested by the Wake County District Attorney.

And yet today, more than a full year after her office was apprised of the concerns, the Wake County District Attorney, the county’s chief law enforcement officer, has yet to report back to the citizens about whether Abdullah himself was merely incompetent or in fact knowingly put people in jail on false charges.

According to one website set up to petition for action, Lorrin Freeman responded to a request for an update with a short email on January 27, 2021:

We are reviewing what they have provided. There may be follow-up investigation to be done. We have not at this time determined whether criminal charges will be able to be initiated.

First, has the District Attorney gone back and reviewed all Abdullah’s old cases?

In February 2019, the Wake County District Attorney took one of Abdullah’s cases to trial, forcing the man to defend himself against charges of drug trafficking where he faced mandatory minimum of years in prison.

Second, what is being done to compensate the victims of these injustices for the months they spent in jail or prison.

Third, how many people were wrongfully convicted on false information provided by Abdullah?

Fortunately, the defense attorney was able to challenge Abdullah’s testimony during roughly four hours of cross examination, and the jury returned a verdict of “Not Guilty” in under 15 minutes.
