I’ve always suspected that Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County in Arizona is corrupt.  Maricopa County is one of the largest counties in the country in terms of size and population.  It encompasses all of Phoenix and its suburbs.

Arpaio wields a great deal of power.  He’s also popular with certain types of people who think his dressing inmates in pink underwear is really funny.  But his thuggish tactics have turned off a lot of people, particularly in the past when he has decided to use his deputies to spy in opponents, and arrest deputies.

Now there’s news out of Phoenix that one of Arpaio’s deputies stole documents from a defense attorney’s folder while her back was turned in court.  It’s absurd.  Sheriffs have no business being near a defense attorney’s files.  Sheriffs have an obligation to preserve order in the court room, and move inmates to and from the jails.  In Wake County, the deputies I’ve encountered perform their jobs with professionalism and integrity.

The Wake County Sheriffs, frankly, are underpaid for what they do.

I can’t say the same for Joe Arpaio or at least this particular deputy who evidently stole privileged documents.
