North Carolina Criminal Background Checks

NC Criminal Convictions Are Public Records

Criminal convictions are public records and are publicly available. While there are limitations on your use of the records – for instance, you cannot harass another person with information you may have lawfully obtained about their criminal history – you can request a state criminal background check in North Carolina by mail or in person by visiting your look courthouse and speaking with one of the deputy clerks of court.

In addition, North Carolina has a publicly available online database of individuals who have been convicted of crimes and who have been processed by the North Carolina Department of Corrections. Visit the Department of Correction’s website by clicking here to do a search by first and last name. You can also do a search for all people who have been released in the last three years.

However, if you want to request a complete criminal history of the individual and you live in Wake County, the easiest way is to visit the Clerk of Courts on the first floor of the Wake County Courthouse at 300 S. Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC (south of E. Martin and Fayetteville Street). Be prepared to pay $15 and provide the full first and last name of the person you want to search.

Or you can view, print out and mail this form (Adobe PDF) with a $15 certified check or money order to the following:

Clerk of Superior Court
